The transformation of self in connection with space highlights a heightened sensitivity to the external world in relation to human identity. This interdependence, in which the geographical boundaries impose themselves as essential conditions for existence, intersects with identity, which perpetually seeks to distinguish itself from others and establish a sense of belonging. These dual aspects offer a unique perspective on how space is perceived. The DNA of selfhood lies in sensitivity, in the capacity to connect with others and, crucially, with the land itself. This exploration delves into the theme of exile, identifying and analysing the characteristics of voluntary or involuntary departure onto foreign soil through a literary lens.

This study specifically emphasises the intersection of physical and psycho-emotional exile, focusing on the lives of Romanian female writers who have experienced a rupture of self and homeland. Romanian writers Felicia Mihali, Liliana Lazăr, and Alexandra Badea have chosen the French cultural sphere as a new direction for their lives, whether on Canadian or French soil. Their novels serve as spaces of refuge, creating a necessary suspended territory that allows them to develop the capacity to adapt to a new life with different customs and habits. This study emphasizes the theme of exile within an original, feminine Romanian universe that demonstrates resilience and a keen understanding of human complexity, all while facing alienation. These three authors have forged a space for a rich, new literature bridge to neo-sensitivity that combines a profound past with hope for the future.

Liliana Lazar's works focus on exploring a world marked by the combination of reality and the fantastical. In these stories, the Romanian identity blends with an atmosphere where the mystical and the symbolic elements become a tangible reality. The suspended space between worlds develops through characters caught between opposing forces, as well as through the presence of rural symbols, creating an atmosphere of seclusion. This approach, with a perspective directed toward the intimate depths, highlights the revealing aspects of local myths and superstitions. The suspended world depicted by Liliana Lazar in Terre des affranchis and Enfants du diable underscores the richness of pagan traditions and rituals alongside Christian values, enveloping everything within the citadel of the fantastic. The sense of confinement provides the ideal setting to illuminate real subjects within a symbolic, isolated climate. Our article explores how Liliana Lazar creates a narrative space where reality merges with imagination, offering a reflection on the Romanian identity. Set in remote villages, her stories address themes of superstition and ancestral beliefs. Through symbolic elements like mystical forests and folkloric rituals, she places her characters in a world suspended between tradition and change, where the past continues to shape the present. The study examines how this narrative "in-between" allows Lazar to address complex identity themes, where pagan rites, collective traumas, and isolation contribute to the emergence of magical realism.

Déracinement au féminin et quête de soi

In this article, we address the question of women living the experience of exile: chosen or suffered. There are many reasons for abandoning families and countries for an indefinite period. Nevertheless, we know for a fact that it is a quest whose goal is to access a better life. Migration and its geopolitical impacts have always been a favourite subject for researchers without giving the same importance to the situation of women living this trying experience. However, the problem of the latter represents a subject of general interest that has long been obscured in a context where they are the main victims of psychological or physical abuse. Our corpus is made up of the testimonies of women aiming for professional integration, met during the FLE classes that we provide, and this article represents the joint reflection, with two different perspectives on the question, of a thesis coordinator and her PhD student.
